There are two roads from Kasaragod to Kanhangad. One is the coastal road via Bakel which is suitable for those who opt for crowded village roads with little maintenance. The people in this area are also a little uncultured with ancient driving habits. But the national highway through Cherkkala is superb and well maintained. You have to drive five additional kilometres but you reach much earlier than the marine drive.
After Cherkkala town, you have to turn right to avoid
reaching Mysore by mistake. The road is
winding all the way down to Thekkil bridge which is a very scenic and shady
area. Little towns like Thayyil,
Chattamchal, Kuniya and Periya dot the way.
Navodaya school and the Central University are the main landmarks on the
way. At Periya junction, there is a
small government restaurant called Vazhiyoram run by a provincial government agency
called DTPC where good food is available at good rates too. After Periya, you come across little villages like
Keloth, Pollakkada, Pullur, Moolakandam and Haripuram. At Pullur there is a bridge and a few cute
temples like Dharma Shastha temple, Gulikan temple and Subramanya Samy
Kovil. The next town is Mavungal
junction from where you have to turn right to escape from reaching Calicut by
mistake. The road on the right takes you
directly to Kanhangad town through a number of cute bends and curves. There is the world famous Ananda Ashram and
the cave temple of Nithyananda Ashram quite nearby. When you finally reach Kanhangad, you will
find it a very crowded and unruly places.
Yes, you can escape to Vadakaramukku village, some two kilometres away, where you can access the beach of Kanhangad.
